What's wrong with this picture?

rant

Local IP: 192.168.107.78 Netmask : 255.255.255.0 Gateway IP: 192.168.10.1

Exactly what is wrong with this picture?

It was the network setup of a client of mine. And if any of you can understand how a network works, you will see that this configuration will not work. And this is quite true. BUT IT DOES WORK!!! Windows seems to take no notice at all of this strange thing called "standards" and connects to the gateway using the local ip completely ignoring the subnet mask.

Linux on the other hand, threw a hissy fit and refused to have anything to do with it. And I really don't blame it. Those standards are there for a reason and the reason is security. So there I was, faced with a problem. If I tried to fix this screwed up system I would have to go through a massive process of convincing people that their system was wrong and that they should start using one subnet. This would be great if it were something that could realistically happen. So I took the path of least resistance, changed the netmask to 255.255.0.0 and took the cash and walked out the door

What would YOU have done?

I'd have done the same thing to answer your question :)

However windows is known to come up with this weird stuff. I was once told that when configuring through the home networking wizard you HAVE to have the IP addresses in the private range. Well now I know that a private network is supposed to have a private IP, but my argument was that if the network is isolated there is nothing wrong in configuring it with any IP.

If you happen to know anything about it, please post back; I mean even any flaws in my argument :)

I’m not a network expert. Don’t you think it is something to do with the gateway’s Start Address and End Address Range or it is Subnet?

To Kulendra
personally i believe that it is ALWAYS best to have private addresses in the private range, no matter if the network will be connected or not. it is simply best practices. also you never know when/if someone will decide this network needs to be on "teh intarweb" (you know, the one that's made of tubes). It is better to set the best practices down right now instead of having to redo the entire thing later.

Well yeah true, but I believe that it still should ALLOW to assign them. But thanks for the opinion :)
